Prairies REVP Marianne Hladun wrote a follow up letter to Saskatoon-Humboldt MP Brad Trost regarding the Conservative government's conflicting actions around human trafficking after the original letter from July 3, 2012 was ignored.
Dear Mr. Trost:
I have yet to receive a response to the letter I sent you via email on July 3, 2012 regarding your government’s position on human trafficking, especially related to the extensive cuts to Canada Border Services Agency.
Your attendance at the performance of She Has a Name, back on June 2, 2012 and your participation in the post-show panel suggested that you have an interest in this important issue. Your government’s policies, which you propounded at the event, demonstrate your commitment to the prevention of human trafficking so surely you can appreciate the concerns raised in my previous letter.
As I mentioned, my personal involvement with a Saskatoon charity has underlined the importance of fighting human trafficking, a crime that destroys human dignity. This is a cause close to my heart. I would very much appreciate a response from you outlining your position on your government’s decision to eliminate Intelligence Officers and how that could possibly be advantageous to Canada’s National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking.
Just last week I had an opportunity to meet with CBSA members both at an international airport and at several border points. I am even more convinced that any cuts to Intelligence Officer positions or front-line Border Services Officers will certainly put citizens and their communities at risk.
