Special Valentine's Day greeting for the PM

Valentine's Day is a time to express your feelings and let the people in your life know what you think of them. So for PSAC members in Southern Alberta, the first person on their Valentine's list this year was Prime Minister Stephen Harper––and the message was anything but loving.

Members from the Calgary Area Council, Regional Women's Committee and Human Rights Committee worked together with members from the Lethbridge Area Council and Regional Women's Committee to come up with the perfect way to let Harper know exactly how they feel.

They developed a special Valentine's Day card that reads:

Dear Steve,
Roses are red
Violets are blue
We want a new Prime Minister
and it isn't you!

The message was shared on social media, including Facebook and Twitter, and quickly garnered likes and shares. Additionally, Sherry Hunt, PRC Southern Alberta Geographical Rep, e-mailed the greeting directly to Harper.

"What I love about this is the use of humor to convey the message––the juxtaposition between wishing someone a Happy Valentine's Day and the cutting honesty of the sentiment in the message," says Hunt. "That's why social media is such and engaging forum for me. When politicians engage on social media, they can’t dazzle and baffle with long winded propogandizing. Social media is where we as activists are able to shape the conversation and the traditional news media watches, people in power pay attention."
