PSAC Prairies held the third webinar in our Webinar Wednesday series on March 11. The webinar, titled Child Care: Our Vision for Tomorrow, took a look back at the issue of child care to see how far we've come and how far we still need to go. We also discussed the current landscape of child care in Canada, including current legislation and proposed policies aimed at families and child care.
What was discussed:
- Denise Kouri, a public policy analyst based in Saskatoon, spoke about her roots in the child care movement as an activist for more than 40 years. She was first involved with Saskatchewan Working Women, a feminist organization of female wage earners fighting for good child care. Denise talked about her involvement with organization, as well as her ongoing fight for good child care and why the issue is so important to her.
- Sherry Hunt, a child care advocate and active PSAC member, spoke about the consequences of what's being called the child care crisis and the important of quality, affordable, accessible child care. She also discussed opportunities for people to get involved in the movement, including several important campaigns and helpful resources.
- Marianne Hladun, PSAC Prairies Regional Executive Vice-President, said even though she doesn't have kids, this is still an important issue to her and should be for all of us. She also spoke about how we can talk to members about this issue to help them understand why this is important to everyone and why we would all benefit from a national child care program.
