Northern Alberta

The Northern Alberta region includes members in Edmonton and surrounding areas, who are serviced out of the Edmonton Regional Office, responsible for nearly 4,000 members.

On September 15 the Public Service Alliance of Canada held a National Day of Action from coast to coast to coast. PSAC members, community advocates and concerned citizens alike gathered together at various events across the Prairies to celebrate the public services they value most. These services are being jeopardized or damaged by the ongoing federal cuts. We are ALL affected by the cuts to federal services and jobs imposed by the Conservative government.

For the Sept. 15 National Day of Action in Edmonton, PSAC members held a family BBQ with kids' activities including face painting, balloons and tattoos, colouring centre and treat bags, and family activities like three-legged races, potato sac races, and scavenger hunt. Edmonton Catholic Schools Support Staff from CEP local 52A are on strike for negotiated wage increases and working hours. The employer, Edmonton Catholic School District, refuses to negotiate the second year of wages on a two-year contract and instead wants to put into place a wage re-opener provision. Staff is also facing the erosion of full time positions and increased workload. Workers have less time to meet the needs of students.

September 15, 2012 is PSAC's National Day of Action with special events happening throughout the Prairie Region and across the country to highlight the We Are ALL Affected campaign.Join community members, labour organizations, public service workers and their families for a national day of action to protest cuts made to  federal responsibilities such as food inspection, Old Age Security, the environment, parks, health care, search and rescue, assistance to our veterans, border security and transportation safety.

Labour Day is a time to recognize the contributions of workers and their unions and their collective efforts to build stronger, safer communities for everyone. This year, on September 3, PSAC members attended and volunteered at various events throughout the Prairie Region to recognize the annual event.

The 6th Triennial Prairie Region Convention will be held June 27-29, 2014 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at TCU Place, Saskatoon’s Arts & Convention Centre.

Issue:  UFCW 1118 on strike/lockout for fair wages and working hours. Actions Requested:  Support your sisters and brothers on the picket line at 127 Avenue and 76 Street in Edmonton. When:  Pickets will be going in shifts between Monday and Friday, 6 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

 The Edmonton Regional Women’s Committee is seeking donations  from Locals for this year’s Tools for School campaign. Donations can be made by cash or cheque before August 30, 2012.These monies go to the Tools for School campaign put on by the United Way Alberta Capital Region. Last year, they filled 12,118 backpacks with school supplies through the annual program that aims to help more students succeed.
