REGIONAL WOMEN'S COMMITTEE NEWSLETTER

The Regional Women's Committee is an independent decision making body that is part of the formal structure of the PSAC. We meet regularly and are mandated to develop projects and activities that promote advancement of women in the union and labour movement. Please join us the first Tuesday of the month at 6:00pm at the Calgary Regional office located at 301-14th Street, Northwest, Suite 302 or by teleconference. 

Violence against women happens in all cultures and religions, in all ethnic and racial communities, at every age, and in every income group.

However, some women are especially at risk:

  • Aboriginal women (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) are more than eight times more likely to be killed by their intimate partner than non-Aboriginal women. - Violence Against Women Fact Sheet, Status of Women Canada. 
  • Young women are especially at risk. 66% of all female victims of sexual assault are under the age of twenty-four, and 11% are under the age of eleven.- 2009 Annual Statistics Report, Toronto Police Services P.17
  • Women aged 15 to 24 are killed at nearly three times the rate for all female victims of domestic homicide. -www.Canadianwomen.org
  • 60% of women with a disability experience some form of violence.-Women with Disabilities and Violence Fact Sheet, DAWN Canada, undated.
  • Immigrant women may be more vulnerable to domestic violence due to economic dependence, language barriers, and a lack of knowledge about community resources.-Violence Against Women Fact Sheet, Status of Women Canada

16 Days of Activism

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign that came from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute in 1991. The event takes place annually between  November      25th (International Day of  Violence against Women) and December 10th (International Human Rights Day)

The purpose of the 16 days of Activism Against Gender Violence to generate an increased level of awareness relating to the incidence of violence against women and children, how it manifests itself within society and the negative impact on these vulnerable groups.  The campaign challenges perpetrators of these offences to change their behaviour.

Support the campaign by wearing the white ribbon during the 16-day period: A white ribbon is a symbol of peace and symbolizes the commitment of the wearer to never commit or condone violence against women and children.

The Calgary Women's Resource Center, located at the University of Calgary offers various fun and informative workshops year round. Upcoming is the [participation in the 16 days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign which begins November 25 lasting until December 10. Each day the WRC sends out a 'thought of the day' which is an informative piece we encourage all to read and as such the RWC will forward to members each day. Below are the dates and associated 'thought' for 2011.  This years ‘thought of the day will soon be released on the site.

Upcoming Events

Each Newsletter the RWC would like to provide up to date information that affects everyone. In doing such we will post upcoming events, classes, campaigns, seminars, advertisements and news. We encourage everyone to write in with questions, stories, events they would like posted, concerns, and commentary to local events.

Education Planning Meeting

The PSAC Prairie Region Council Education Committee invites you to come and join us for a conversation about the 2013-2015 PSAC Prairie Region Education Plan Date: Lethbridge meeting is being held Tuesday December 11th  in the  Community Room at theLethbridge Regional Police Station, 135 – 1st Avenue South and Calgary Wednesday December 12th at the  PSAC Calgary Regional Office located at the Hillhurst Professional Building 301 – 14th Street Northwest, Suite 302

-Come out and meet other PSAC members and staff who share your interest in the PSAC Prairie Region education program

The Giving Project Knitting Night

Join us December 3 between 6:30-9:pm at Round Street Cafe located at 427 5st S, to stitch, chat and gather our home-made Gifts. Coffee, tea and baked goods will be provided courtesy of the Round Street Café and P.S.A.C. Agriculture Union Human Rights Committee. Knit or crochet a toque, scarf, mitts, or socks to donate to our Giving Project. Gifts will be donated to a suitable local charity.

December 6th Memorial

Thursday, December 6, 2012 in the Great Hall at the Rozsa Centre from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. Women's Healing Cirlce through the Awo Taan Healing Lodge
