As we have in the past few years, PSAC will once again boycott National Public Service Week (NPSW), June 14-20, 2015. We ask that our members not participate in activities in the workplace and encourage coworkers to join the boycott.
By slashing jobs and cutting crucial federal programs, this government has demonstrated their disdain for our members and the work they do. The government’s recent decision to bypass the collective bargaining process and legislate a new sick leave program for employees will cause irreparable damage to labour relations.
We have the utmost respect for our members and for all public service workers. We also treasure our Charter right to free collective bargaining and cannot stand to be bullied. That’s why it’s especially important that we do not participate in NPSW events, which claim to honour public service workers while simultaneously trampling on our bargaining rights and stealing our sick leave.
Instead of attending the employer events, we’re encouraging locals to hold their own events. We’ve distributed “Respect” buttons and stickers for members to wear during (and after) NPSW to send a message that public service workers deserve respect in the workplace and at the bargaining table. We’re also asking members to sign the petition calling on Tony Clement to respect our right to collective bargaining.
If you haven’t already, send a letter to your MP, as a concerned constituent and public service worker, speaking out about the attack on your collective bargaining rights and explaining your decision to not participate in NPSW events.
We have an opportunity to make our voices heard. Let’s use NPSW to send a message against these attacks.
In Solidarity,
Marianne Hladun
