Fort McMurray: Appeal for Volunteers and Donations

We know that many Canadians have been affected by the wildfires in Fort McMurray and this is a stressful and tragic time for Albertans.

During the devastation we have all seen evidence of the overwhelming support that has come from our neighbours, our friends, our family, and even strangers.

We know that during this crisis, PSAC members are doing what they can to assist the people of Fort McMurray and are welcoming the thousands of people who are or will be entering the City of Edmonton with open arms.

If you have not yet had the chance to volunteer, we would like to encourage you to in any way you can. Many of you have a Volunteer Day in your Collective Agreement and this would be a perfect example of a time to use it.

There are many ways in which you can Volunteer and listed below are three:

Join us on Wednesday, May 11: Regional Executive Vice President for the Prairies Sister Marianne Hladun will be in Edmonton next week volunteering at one of the donation centres in the area on Wednesday May 11, 2016. The location is yet to be determined as there is many different locations and the locations may change. If you would like to join her using your volunteer day please let us know as soon as possible. Email: brettm@psac.com

Edmonton Emergency Relief Services (this is the title of the page) has a Facebook page that you can follow closely for Volunteer Opportunities to sort donations and create relief packages. Please check the page frequently as they do change locations if one becomes full. We have contacted them and they suggest arriving to volunteer on location for 9:00 am. You can also contact them at 780-428-4422 if you would like more information. There are also a number of sites you can make physical donations to that you will find on this Facebook page as well.

Edmonton Food Bank will be accepting donations for those affected by the fires. These donations can be dropped off at any grocery store or fire hall.

There are many other ways that we can show our Solidarity to those in Fort McMurray. Please follow the link to the CBC web page to find out how:
