On June 18, 2012, Border Services Officers in Coutts, Alberta wore green “I Support My Bargaining Team” shoelaces, as well as “Security OUR Priority” stickers as a show of solidarity for the CIU bargaining team going back to the bargaining table from June 18 - 20.
Negotiations had previously reached an impasse in the last round and strong support for the bargaining team was very much appreciated.
One supervisor on duty wrote a topic in the briefing binder asking officers to remove the laces and stickers. But, as one member pointed out, a previous Public Service Labour Relations Board decision determined that PSAC members at the Border Services Agency have a right to support their bargaining team even when they are wearing their uniform.
Previously, members in Montreal held a Blue Jeans Day where all Border Services Officers wore blue jeans instead of uniform pants.
In a workplace that typically faces intimidation from management, almost all Coutts members came together for this action. It significantly improved the morale and overall sense of solidarity in the workplace.
Due to the positive feedback and nation-wide demand for similar actions, PSAC has turned the green shoelace initiative into a national mobilizing campaign.
Congratulations to all those involved and the brave members who laced up in solidarity.
