PSAC members to rally for Canada Post workers

WINNIPEG, MB – More than four hundred members and staff of the Public Service Alliance of Canada will march through Portage and Main Friday, June 10 to protest Canada Post’s disgraceful approach to bargaining with their employees who are members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

Beginning at 12:10 p.m., PSAC members will leave the Fairmont Winnipeg at 2 Lombard Place and march six blocks to the Canada Post building at 266 Graham Avenue to rally for members of CUPW, who have been participating in rotating strikes across the country since June 3. These members share the same employer as over 160 PSAC members in the Prairie Region.

“Canada Post is looking to save money on the backs of their hard working employees,” said John Gordon, PSAC National President. “PSAC members working for Canada Post fought the same battle in 2008 and CUPW members stood beside us in solidarity. We are proud to stand beside them once again and will continue to fight employer concessions.”

PSAC members from across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta are in town this weekend for the 5th Prairie Region Triennial Convention and rally organizers are taking advantage of the opportunity to send a strong message to Canada Post that they won’t stand for cuts. All labour affiliates in the area are being encouraged to participate in the lunch hour rally.

Gordon will kick off the rally at 12:25 p.m. at 266 Graham Avenue by speaking out against the proposed employer concessions and the attacks on this valuable public service. Also speaking at the rally will be CUPE National President Paul Moist and CUPW National Vice-President Gayle Bossenberry.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada represents 172,000 workers across the country and more than 23,000 in the Prairie Region, the majority of whom are in the federal public sector including over 160 Canada Post employees.
