Striking Casino workers to rally at the Leg

REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN – From picketing to political action, striking Casino Regina employees will host a rally at the Regina Legislative Building on July 8, 2010 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and are asking all supporters and friends to join them in solidarity.

“It’s been one month and still no progress has been made” explains Robyn Benson, Regional Executive Vice-President for PSAC Prairie Region. “On July 8, we’re rallying to be seen. We’re rallying to be heard. And we’re rallying to send a clear message to Brad Wall’s government: We deserve a fair and equitable collective agreement and absolutely will not settle for less.”

The striking Casino workers – members of both PSAC and RWDSU – have received physical and financial support from countless other unions, as well as members of the public and Casino patrons. Now, they are reaching out to MLAs, board members and other decision makers in an effort to garner support and put an end to the labour dispute.

Dwain Lingenfelter, leader of the Saskatchewan NDP, has supported the Casino workers from day one by visiting the picket line on several occasions. "The Wall government must sit down and negotiate these collective agreements in good faith,” says Lingenfelter. “Too many times we have seen a lack of consultation from the Wall government and a failure to honour negotiated contracts such as with the Labour workers and the 25,000 Health Care workers who still remain without a contract."

PSAC last met with the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation (SGC) on June 30 to discuss the collective agreement. Unfortunately, both parties were once again unable to come to an agreement. Currently there are no dates scheduled to return to the bargaining table.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada represents approximately 425 members working at Casino Regina. PSAC represents 172,000 workers across Canada, the majority of whom are in the federal public sector.
