Last year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that June 21, formerly known as National Aboriginal Day, would now be recognized as National Indigenous Peoples Day. It continues to be an annual day to celebrate the rich, diverse cultures of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. It’s also an opportunity to learn more about Indigenous peoples and their contributions to Canada, as well as their struggle for respect in confederation.
PSAC has many Indigenous members and values meaningful reconciliation with Canada’s Indigenous peoples. At the recent PSAC National Triennial Convention, delegates voted in favour of ongoing Indigenous awareness training on the legacy and impact of residential schools, the 60’s scoop and 150 years of assimilation policy. The resolution, which was passed unanimously, also supported the Truth and Reconciliation’s Commission’s Call to Action #57 that calls for education on the history of Indigenous peoples.
PSAC members are urged to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day and to reflect on how we can all work to build a more respectful future together.
