Talking Union Basics – Edmonton – Facilitator: Carm Chan
Saturday, September 8th and Sunday, September 9th, 2018
9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
If you have wondered what it means to be a union member, how the PSAC works, and what happens to your dues dollars then Talking Union Basics provides answers to these questions. The course also introduces the collective agreement, your employee rights and your rights as a member of the PSAC. You will learn about the many opportunities to be active in the union and ways you can make a contribution to building strong locals in the Prairie region. Talking Union Basics is a requirement to participating in other PSAC courses and events. This course provides you with the basic knowledge in order for you to get the most out of other courses.
Union Works for Women – Regina
Thursday, September 20th to Monday, September 24th, 2018
This course is for PSAC women members who live and work in the Prairie region; have completed the TUB (Talking Union Basic) course or have gained equivalent experience through being an active PSAC member; and would like to learn about issues facing women and how to address them through the union.
Training for New Local Officers – Edmonton – Facilitator: Anne Juneau
Saturday, September 29th and Sunday, September 30th, 2018
9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
This course will bring together Local Executive members for skill development and knowledge building. Local Executive members will learn to work more effectively together by developing an understanding of their roles and responsibilities. The course will introduce alternatives to assist with decision-making processes, and help participants develop the tools necessary for managing Local workloads more effectively.
Grievance Handling – Edmonton – Facilitator: Carm Chan
Saturday, October 13th and Sunday, October 14, 2018
9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
This two-day course for union stewards will develop participants’ knowledge, skills, and confidence in effectively solving problems at the workplace. A major portion of time will be spent on the relevant technical skills i.e. identifying, investigating, writing up, and presenting grievances.

Stewards Training – Planning for Action!

Objectives: To build an understanding of the importance of collective action and mobilization to the Union; To examine the factors that lead to member participation in actions; know the Steward’s role in mobilizing members; explore tools to plan for successful actions; identify possible actions; practice mobilizing around a specific action.

Objectives: Know more about the roles and responsibilities of workers, employers, and unions regarding healthy and safe workplaces; increased confidence talking with members about their health and safety rights; be able to describe ways to build healthy and safe workplaces.

Unionism on Turtle Island – Calgary
Wednesday, November 29th to Sunday, December 2nd, 2018
This course is for union members who want to learn more about Aboriginal issues. Participants will explore the history of oppression and resistance, Aboriginal issues at the bargaining table, creating a representative workforce, and supporting Aboriginal activists in the union. This course will provide a comfortable and supportive environment in which participants can explore their attitudes, ideas and questions. Participants will develop strategies to encourage solidarity and build the union. Prerequisites: The TUB (Talking Union Basics) course or equivalent experience; a commitment to furthering your understanding of the issues facing Aboriginal workers and to working in solidarity with First Nations and Métis Sisters and Brothers.
Facing Management – Edmonton – Facilitator: Anne Juneau

Local union representatives meet with management representatives as equals for various reasons – grievance hearing, union management committees and consultations and sometimes for collective agreement negotiations. This course will develop your knowledge, skills and confidence to effectively consult with or confront management to enhance the union’s presence at the workplace.
