December 6 marks the anniversary of the Montréal Massacre which took place at the École Polythechnique in 1989. 14 young women were killed. They will never be forgotten. On this day the PSAC – Prairie Region recommits to the elimination of all forms of violence against women.
The safety and dignity of all women and girls is a priority for the PSAC, both in the workplace and in our communities. At this year’s National Triennial Convention, delegates unanimously committed our union to take action supporting victims of domestic violence. These steps include lobbying federal, provincial and territorial governments for paid leave, reasonable unpaid leave, options for flexible work arrangements, guaranteed job security and mandatory workplace training on domestic violence and sexual violence. We are calling on the federal Liberal government to offer 10 days of paid domestic violence leave now.
We know that women and girls who share their experiences of harassment or violence continue to face repercussions for speaking out. This has to change. We will stand with women and girls, and keep working to end sexual harassment and domestic violence.
