REVP Statement - March 21, 2019: International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Every year, we recognize March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Racism is unacceptable in all its forms - but in 2019 there a rising tide of intolerance and we need to fight back in our workplaces and in our communities.

We have seen far too many examples of the deadly consequences of racism and intolerance. Too many lives have been lost to violent and extremist hate - but that violence does not come out of nowhere. It comes from racist speech, ignorance and lies.

This year, the United Nations theme is: “Mitigating and countering rising nationalist populism and extreme supremacist ideologies”. It is important for us all to recognize the dangerous rise of hate-filled ideologies that threaten people from racialized backgrounds on a daily basis.

That is why it is necessary that governments and political leaders stand up against hatred and for a just and equitable future. Call on leaders to take a stand a better future free from fear, hatred and racial discrimination.

Our union has never backed down from challenging racism in our workplaces and our communities.  We must and will continue to advocate for and support those who stand to eliminate racism in any form.
