REVP Statement: International Human Rights Day 2019

Members of Our Union Family,

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted in 1948. International Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10 in recognition of this achievement and to promote further action to advance human rights around the world.

The 2019 United Nations theme for International Human Rights Day is “Youth Standing Up for Human Rights”. From trans rights and to the struggle against gender-based violence, increased accessibility for people with disabilities or standing up against racism and bigotry in all its forms, youth are leading the way.

Recognizing the increasingly online world in which young people live, we know there is great opportunity for progress, as well as real threats to human dignity. That is why we stand with young people around the world and in our own communities who are working to make a positive difference. Examples include the young people in Alberta fighting for Gay/Straight Alliances in schools and the fight for a fair and decent minimum wage across Canada.

PSAC is proud of the young workers in our union fighting for greater diversity and representation in their workplaces and in our own organizations. Let us all stand in solidarity with people of all ages to build a better world with dignity and human rights for all.

In solidarity,

Marianne Hladun
Regional Executive Vice-President, Prairies
