REVP Letter: Trans Day of Remembrance

Dear Sisters and Brothers:

Re: Transgender Day of Remembrance

On November 20, 2010, we honour and remember the victims who were affected by or lost to transphobia related murders and abuse around the world. Over the last decade, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice and their deaths are often ignored by the public and unreported by the media.

This annual Day of Remembrance gives us the change to stand together as allies, as supporters, and as Brothers and Sisters, to memorialize the victims. But also, to commit to fighting for equality to make our workplaces and our communities safe and inclusive for everyone.

I encourage you to learn more about trans issues and support Brothers and Sisters in your workplace that are transitioning. Information about trans issues, bargaining demands and workers in transition is available at www.canadianlabour.ca, under “Human Rights and Equality” and “Pride”. You can also visit the PSAC Prairies home page for a listing of Transgender Day of Remembrance vigils in your area.

In Solidarity,

Robyn Benson
