REVP Letter: 2012 Human Rights Day

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10 to acknowledge the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. This is an exciting opportunity for us to recognize the work of human rights advocates around the world, and right here within our union.

PSAC members across the Prairies work together on Human Rights Committees in their areas, and do important human rights work within their Component or Local, in an effort to end discrimination and support community organizations with the same values.

We have seen major triumphs in the area of human rights, including PSAC’s landmark Supreme Court win a year ago that reinforced UDHR, Article 23 “Equal Pay for Equal Work for All” for women working at Canada Post. Most recently, we saw a boost in support for gay marriage, with Americans standing up for UDHR Article 16 and voting in favour of “The Right to Marriage and Family for All”.

But for every success, there are still ten more cases being hard fought by human rights activists. Visit Celebrate Human Rights to celebrate the birthday of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and make a wish for everyone to enjoy the protected rights. You can also learn more about each of the 30 different UDHR articles.

In Solidarity,
