Please describe the activity (where, when, how many people would be involved, etc.).
We would like to register a team into the ATB Financial Lethbridge Rotary Dragon Boat Festival. Registration would be open to 22 PSAC members who are interesting in participating on a first-come-first-serve basis.
This is prominent weekend long (June 26-28) festival that promotes an abundance of community involvement for both racers and non-racers. It is big draw for Lethbridge and surrounding areas as there are vendors, entertainment and activities for kids. This event also captures a great deal of media attention throughout the weekend.
We feel this event would really bring PSAC into the community forefront. A tent would be setup at the festival grounds and throughout the weekend racers would have the opportunity to talk to members of the public regarding the public services PSAC members provide, raise awareness of federal government cuts and advocated the value of unions within a community. Members across components would have the opportunity to interact with each other and unify, all the while raising the profile of the union and competing with other prominent community groups. Racers would wear “We Are All Affect” t-shirt at part of our race uniform. Additionally, 8 members will be working the booth and the crowds to have discussions on our priorities.
Photos will be taken throughout the weekend and could be posted to the PSAC website, Our Union Voice, twitter feed, shared at local, committees, and area council meetings.
In addition, as a Rotary event, all proceeds from the festival support Rotary funded community and international projects. For more information on Rotary Clubs in Lethbridge and their projects, go to http://rotaryinlethbridge.ca
What resources do you need (flyers, promotional items, member expenses, etc.)? Please be as specific as possible.
Total cost of the project: $1400+
Registration: $950 + Half Tent Rental $250 = $1200
Refreshments: $200.00
WE ARE ALL AFFECTED T-shirts and hats (30) = ????
Registration includes:
- Use of a boat
- Two practices
- Two guaranteed races
- Tent 10x10
PSAC banners, literature, stickers, tattoos, balloons for the kids would be beneficial for the tent. “We Are Affected” T-shirts for racers. There are also competitions for best team spirit, best decorated tent.

Sister Krysty Munns (Human Rights Representative AGU Local 30048, Secretary, Lethbridge Women’s Committee). Was recently chosen by the PSAC to travel to Guatemala on the PSAC Social Justice Education in Action delegation. Please describe the activity (where, when, how many people would be involved, etc.)
We would like to sponsor the raffle car at the Coaldale Demolition Derby being held on June 06, 2015 (rain delay date June 13, 2015). The cost is $2,000.00. With this sponsorship, we will be able to put any decals/bumper stickers that we want on the vehicle which will be parked front and centre for the public to see throughout the day. Then, just previous to the final race, a name is drawn from the raffle and the person picked gets to drive the vehicle in the final race. The raffle car is announced (including our name, Public Service Alliance of Canada, every 30 minutes by the race announcer throughout the day. It is our plan to have 3 shifts of at least four people around the vehicle talking to the public discussing our priorities. When the announcement is made the person the member is talking to will get a article of swag. It is a fantastic way to get our name out to the public. There are people coming and going from the event all day (10am - 11pm). Approximately 2000 people attend this event. We will also have an "info Booth" and there is always lots of media coverage.

We would like to organize a “Budget Watch” for the upcoming Federal Budget.
We would rent the Lethbridge Public Library “Community Room” (if available) as soon as the budget date is set.
Invitations for participants would include the local candidates from all national parties in our area, local ally groups, members from other Labour organizations (especially those directly affected such as CUPW, PIPSC, CAPE etc.), and the general public.

The event will be advertised primarily through our own email and social media networks.
We will do a media release for the event and invite local press.
We would provide background information to all attendees on issues important to public services and Public Servants.
We would hope to have around 20 participants at least.

Getting out the Vote with Womenspace:
We would like to partner Womanspace Resource Centre (Lethbridge, Alberta), in their upcoming election initiatives to encourage women, especially indigenous women and Womanspace clientele and target clientele.
This action would involve community outreach to ally groups and require volunteer time from our members and all plans would be in collaboration with Womenspace.
Womanspace is a nonprofit feminist resource and advocacy service, operating in our community for over 25 years, but has not received any federal funding since the Status of Women Grants were cut by the Harper Government in 2012, likely because of the agencies grassroots feminism, political activity and reproductive health advocacy. The agency also provides a free tax clinic to individuals that require assistance in filing but cannot pay for the service assistance in acquiring identification for marginalized women and education on feminist issues to the community at large.
We would volunteer time to assist in educating this audience on political rights, and issues important to them and to us as public servants. Special attention would be paid to the need for Indigenous women to get out and vote on electionday.
Planning is currently in its infancy, but plans may include, canvassing, providing transportation on election day to marginalized voters and providing women resources to the Centre; such as printing (or printing costs) and costs associated with the implementation and promotion of this initiative (events, literature, posters, etc.)
Resources Needed:
- Printing costs: $500.00
- Travel/fuel (for volunteer drivers). $250.00
- Member Salary reimbursement $2000.00
- Contribution towards implementation costs (events literature, Posters, etc). $1500.00
- Some staff time assisting with promotional materials 4-8 hours
- PSAC literature on election issues related to women, poverty, childcare, senior women, indigenous women and girls, reproductive health and access to quality public services
Total estimated costs: $4250
