Expression of Interest for AFL Executive Council Vice-Presidents

We are currently seeking interested candidates to represent the more than 9,000 PSAC members across Alberta on the Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) Executive Council.

Between conventions, the AFL is run by its two elected officers — the president and the secretary-treasurer — along with the Executive Council. The Executive Council, which meets between five and eight times a year, is made up of representatives from each affiliated union. Unions with between 1,000 and 2,500 members are entitled to one seat at the council table and unions with more than 2,500 members have two seats.

During the most recent AFL Convention, held April 27–30, 2017 in Edmonton, PSAC did not have enough registered delegates to run elections. In accordance with the AFL Constitution, PSAC can appoint representatives, if they are not selected at convention. The appointment would be for two years, until the next AFL Convention in 2019.

While this is a volunteer leadership role, PSAC covers all costs related to participation on the AFL Executive Council and for the AFL Convention, including loss of salary, travel (if required), meals and other required expenses. You will be required to provide reports to the PSAC Prairies REVP prior to and following Executive Council meetings.

Please identify your interest in this opportunity, your component, local number and any relevant experience on the attached expression of interest form. As the priority for the AFL is preparing for the next provincial election, which will take place on or before May 31, 2019, preference may be given to members with experience in provincial politics.

Applications should be submitted no later than Friday, June 16, 2017, as the first AFL Executive Council meeting and retreat is scheduled for June 26–28, 2017 in Edmonton. If you have further questions, please contact the office of the REVP directly at 204-956-4625.
