On June 21, 2012, The Northern Saskatchewan Regional Aboriginal Peoples’ Circle held a Round Dance, in conjunction with the National Truth & Reconciliation Commission hearings in Saskatoon, to celebrate National Aboriginal Day.
The event started at 4:30 p.m. with a pipe ceremony and feast. The Elders conducted the pipe ceremony to honour and feed those who have traveled to the spirit world.
Later in the evening, Commissioner Marie Wilson spoke on behalf of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. The next speaker was NAPC Prairies Male Rep Alex George, who spoke on behalf of PSAC, NAPC and RAPC, followed by Julia McAdam and her daughter Sylvia McAdam. They spoke of the theme “Miyo Ohpikinawasewin” and provided examples of traditional teachings which have been passed from mother to daughter.
Stickman Robin Longjohn and MC Sanford Strongarm then took over to introduce the Lead Elder who sang four prayer songs, with which all round dances begin with. Approximately 300 people were in attendance throughout the evening.
The Northern Saskatchewan Regional Aboriginal Peoples’ Circle is the first of its kind in the Prairies and has been very active at worksites and in the community.
