Fight to Keep Sick Leave
May 13, 2015, 7:00 p.m. (MB) / 6:00 p.m. (AB/SK)

The federal government has tabled the Budget Implementation Act (Bill C-59), which authorizes Treasury Board to modify collective agreements to remove sick leave and impose a short and long term disability plan outside of collective agreements. The Bill will circumvent the Public Service Labour Relations Act, as well as ongoing negotiations.

Our members have said defending sick leave and our collective bargaining rights must be our top priority, which was reaffirmed last week at PSAC's National Triennial Convention, when delegates unanimously passed an emergency resolution for a $5 million campaign to stand up for our rights and to protect public services.

Find out how your union is responding to this attack on our members' rights and how you can participate in the fightback in this month's webinar, open to all PSAC Prairies members.

Please note: this webinar was originally scheduled to be about labour history, but given the latest developments and the questions we've been receiving from members, the labour history webinar will be rescheduled.

What will be covered?

  • Find out how Bill C-59 ignores the collective bargaining rights of workers;
  • Learn how the PSAC plans to challenge and defend our Charter rights;
  • Hear the emergency resolution passed at PSAC's National Convention; and,
  • Find out how you can be involved in the fight back efforts.

Who should register?

All members. We have nearly 13,000 members employed by Treasury Board in the Prairie Region alone. However, all of our members will be affected by the loss of sick leave because any concession will set the tone for future bargaining with separate employers and those that are provincially and municipally legislated. In other words, we are all affected by concession bargaining.

Additionally, the complete disregard for the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and existing collective agreements that this government has shown with Bill C-59 should be cause for alarm for all union members.

Guest Speakers

  • Robyn Benson

  • Marianne Hladun

  • A Treasury Board bargaining team member or negotiator (TBA)
