Canadian unions support workers fighting AIDS in Africa

The PSAC Social Justice Fund is supporting the Africa Solidarity Tour being organized by the Stephen Lewis Foundation to bring HIV-AIDS awareness to several cities from Winnipeg to Windsor.

Canadian labour has made a difference by directly supporting unions in Africa to fight AIDS.

Around the world, three out of every four people living with HIV are workers. AIDS made inroads in the workplace, with devastating effect on employment, their families and the communities where they live.

In response, Canadian unions have supported African union struggles for workplace and national programs to fight AIDS. In the workplace, they have negotiated provisions for HIV prevention at work, address issues of discrimination, protect the rights of workers living with the disease and support peer education programs.
