GLBT Pride Events in the Prairies

Dear Sisters & Brothers,

Annual GLBT Pride festivities are kicking off across the region and throughout Canada this summer, and PSAC members are participating in a variety of activities to celebrate.

Pride month is a time to build community, increase visibility, and celebrate diversity within the GLBT community. But it’s also a time to celebrate the dedicated and focused GLBT activists and their allies who fight against discrimination and defend equality, and to recognize their achievements.

Just last week, Manitoba’s provincial government proposed changes to the Human Rights Code that would prohibit discrimination based on gender identity, further protecting transgender Manitobans. In Saskatchewan, the Regina Police Service, with EGALE Canada, is delivering a new training program to all employees as part of their ongoing commitment to diversity training. And in the U.S., the repeal of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell law was “one of the most satisfying moments” of Obama’s presidency.

Of course, there is still work to be done. But Pride events throughout the summer give us an opportunity to build on the momentum from these achievements. I encourage all PSAC members to participate in Pride events in their area, and to demonstrate their solidarity with GLBT peoples and their commitment to equal rights for all.
