March 8 is International Women’s Day, an annual celebration of women’s economic, political and social achievements. The 2014 theme for the internationally recognized day is “Inspiring Change”. It calls attention to the positive gains made, but the inequities that still exists and the work we have left to do.
To recognize IWD, PSAC has produced noisemakers for distribution to Locals. The colourful noisemakers feature the slogan “PSAC works for women!” and fold up like fans. When slapped against your hand they are sure to grab attention at future rallies, protests and events.
Stephen Harper has been ruthless with his cuts to public services over the past few years, but the Harper agenda also unfairly targets women. Studies show women in unions have better wages and benefits, which means attacks on unions are attacks on women’s equality. Additionally, the face of poverty is often women, immigrants, and Aboriginal peoples.
We encourage you to attend a local IWD event as a show of support and solidarity. Contact your local PSAC Regional Women’s Committee for information about events in your area. This year, on March 8, ensure your voices, and your noisemakers, are heard all the way on Parliament Hill.
