June 21 is National Aboriginal Day, an annual day to celebrate the rich, diverse cultures of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. It’s also an opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal people and their contributions to Canada.
This past year, our Aboriginal sisters and brothers stood up for all Canadians with the inspirational and well-known Idle No More movement. The movement is about pressuring government and industry to protect the environment, including water, air, land and all creation for future generations, and was very effective at drawing attention to these important issues. We are proud to have been involved and continue to support these efforts.
Later this year, members from across the country will gather for the 2013 PSAC National Equity Conference in Toronto. The conference aims to empower delegates to take action in developing indigenous sustainability in their respective regions, and to change public discourse on indigenous sustainability through education.
In the meantime, PSAC members can celebrate National Aboriginal Day in their communities at over 65 different events being held throughout the Prairie Region alone. Visit the Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada website for more information.
