Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Labour Day is a time to recognize the contributions of workers and their unions and their collective efforts to build stronger, safer communities for everyone. It’s also, now more than ever, a time to celebrate solidarity as we are faced with ongoing cuts to federal departments and services under the Harper government.
This year, we send best wishes to the Alberta Federation of Labour for its centennial anniversary and the work done to better the lives of all Alberta workers and their families. Over a span of 100 years, the AFL has represented millions of Alberta workers, and continues to play a central role in Alberta’s labour movement.
While anniversary celebrations continue into September, Labour Councils throughout the Prairie Region will host various Labour Day events in their respective areas. I encourage you and your family to take part in these events that honour our labour history.
We will also continue to recognize the importance of labour on the PSAC National Day of Action on September 15. The Alliance Executive Committee, Component Presidents, RVPs and NVPs, Locals, Area Councils, Directly Chartered Locals, Regional Committees, affiliates and community partners will come together tostand up for the services we offer and speak out against the damaging federal cuts. Contact your Regional Office for more information.
Have a safe Labour Day Weekend and enjoy the events and celebrations that follow.
In Solidarity,
Marianne Hladun
Regional Executive Vice-President
