PSAC Prairies Following Fort McMurray Wildfire Closely

We are deeply concerned by the ongoing forest fire in Fort McMurray, Alberta. There are no reported deaths or major injuries as of this moment. We have communicated with elected PSAC union representatives in the region to check on the safety of our members in the area.

PSAC Prairies will be making a donation to the Red Cross to assist them in their relief efforts; PSAC components, locals and members are encouraged to do the same. Be vigilant as media is reporting that fake charities and websites may be appearing online.

We will continue to follow this situation as it unfolds. Our thoughts are with the people of Fort McMurray, their families and friends and of course all those who remain to fight the fires.

The wildfire hit Fort McMurray yesterday and hundreds of homes have since been destroyed along with entire neighbourhoods. The city is under an evacuation order and upward of 20,000 people are expected to arrive in Edmonton today. The fire remains very active at the moment. Visit CBC News or follow #ymmfire for updates.
