The first PSAC regional conferences for racially visible members will take place next year.  To prepare, we have developed a survey seeking input from members who self-identify as racially visible.

The 44th International Convention of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) will be held in Chicago Illinois at the Hyatt Regency May 20-25, 2015.  The theme of the Convention is Owning Our Future-Building Our Community.

This year marks the beginning of the International Decade for People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice and Development proclaimed bythe United Nations’ General Assembly to recognize “that people of African descent represent a distinct group whose human rights must be promoted and protected.”

The PSAC BC Racially Visible Caucus and the Union of National Employees BC and Yukon have developed a series of posters, facts, and bookmarks to Celebrate Black History Month and commemorate our heritage.We encourage Prairies member to make use of these materials in their own workplaces. Members can download the series of six informative posters to print and display at their worksites. The posters can be shared one at a time over a six week period, or all at once.

On March 21, 1960, 69 black demonstrators were killed and 180 were wounded by armed white South African police in the Sharpeville Township. More than 700 shots were fired at black demonstrators who were peacefully protesting the country’s discriminatory laws.

The PSAC recognizes and celebrates the past and present contributions of Black people and people of African descent. We also acknowledge the discrimination, barriers and challenges that remain prevalent in Canada.

Each year in February, we honour Black History Month, a time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of black citizens in Canada and around the world.This month allows us the opportunity to reflect on the social forces that have shaped and influenced our communities. We revisit the struggles and challenges inherent in black history in order to continue our work towards harassment free workplaces and a racism free Canada.
