In June, the United Way of Saskatoon and Area said goodbye and thank you to Marianne Hladun for six years of service to the organization and our community. Marianne served as a United Way board member from June 2006 – June 2012. We were not able to thank Marianne publicly at the United Way AGM as she was already hard at work in Winnipeg as Regional Executive Vice-President for the PSAC Prairie Region.
An ambitious seven-day, seven-city tour addressing the six-month student strike in Quebec, visited London, Toronto, Saskatoon, and Regina, before passing through Winnipeg on October 3.The special tour addressed what happened in Quebec, but also how the hard-earned lessons of the longest student strike in Canadian history can be applied to organizing across the country.

The Community Unemployed Help Centre (CUHC) presents the Aspiring Advocates Workshop. There are two dates to choose from for this special, full-day workshop, September 18 (currently full and taking names for the waiting list) and September 26 (there are a few seats still available). Edmonton Catholic Schools Support Staff from CEP local 52A are on strike for negotiated wage increases and working hours. The employer, Edmonton Catholic School District, refuses to negotiate the second year of wages on a two-year contract and instead wants to put into place a wage re-opener provision. Staff is also facing the erosion of full time positions and increased workload. Workers have less time to meet the needs of students.
Labour Day is a time to recognize the contributions of workers and their unions and their collective efforts to build stronger, safer communities for everyone. This year, on September 3, PSAC members attended and volunteered at various events throughout the Prairie Region to recognize the annual event.

CUPE Manitoba is hosting two Town Hall meetings on Employment Insurance, one in Winnipeg and one in Brandon. Guest Speaker Neil Cohen, Director of the Community Unemployed Help Centre will walk us through the Employment Insurance system and outline resources available to unemployed Manitobans. The Town hall will also deal with recent federal cuts to Employment Insurance.Susan Norman, NVP for CEIU Manitoba, will also be speaking at the event.For more information, see attached or visit the MFL events page
