Organizing

The certification of the CMHR non-managerial employees and the pending application for UofW academic assistants generated an organizing momentum, which we will continue to build on as we develop our regional organizing program and strategies.

There are many viable opportunities for PSAC to organize in the Prairie Region and we should expect more campaigns in the future.

PSAC is a large national union formed in 1966 that represents workers in every sector across Canada. We have over 200,000 members and we are the 5th largest union in Canada.  PSAC has worked tirelessly organizing workers in the post-secondary sector and we now have over 27,000 members in over 25 post-secondary institutions in 61 bargaining units. This accounts for 13.5% of PSAC’s overall membership!

As budget day approaches, the Public Service Alliance of Canada is calling on Finance Minister Bill Morneau to create real change by reinvesting in the federal public service for the immediate economic benefit of all Canadians. “We urgently need to see a new approach to the economy from this government. The Liberal election platform promised to improve the quality of public services, including reducing wait times and increasing access to in-person services. We will hold them to that,” said Robyn Benson, PSAC National President.

On October 22, 2012, the Manitoba Labour Board certified PSAC as the bargaining agent for all research assistants and student assistants employed at Brandon University. Local 55601 comprises nearly 400 members employed annually by the university.At their first general meeting on December 3, 2012, members elected the bargaining team and executive for PSAC Local 55601. Corey DeGagné, a Brandon University student who was involved in the organizing drive, was elected Local President.

The past few months have been busy for the local executive and bargaining team at the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development (CAHRD), and they show no sign of slowing down.

All employees at the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development (CAHRD) will now benefit from improved working conditions and free collective bargaining, as nearly 100 workers, ranging from employment counselors to childcare workers and teachers, join the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC).

The PSAC Prairie Region is proud to welcome research assistants, senior research assistants and research associates employed at the University of Winnipeg after the Manitoba Labour Board certified PSAC as their bargaining agent on May 31, 2012.Gregory Furmaniuk, a student organizer on the eight-month long organizing campaign, says the victory means empowerment, respect and fairness for workers.
