Stephen Harper isn’t exactly a proponent of organized labour. He’s also not a big fan of strong public services or the public service workers that provide them. His government’s attacks on public services and union members across this country have been relentless.

But PSAC members are fighting back. Last week members across the region took it upon themselves to counter the anti-labour rhetoric by submitting letters to the editor of their local newspapers.

In the next video from the award-winning Prairies Video Project, members share stories about the fight for maternity leave/family leave in the 1980 CR strike and how their victory has since benefitted countless families.

Sandra Clarke, PSAC/UTE member since 1969, was on the line for that strike. In the video she recalls what it was like before the union sisters fought for leave provisions.

To mark the first contributions made to the unemployment insurance fund more than 73 years ago (July 1, 1941), the Public Service Alliance of Canada is launching “Employment Insurance in Canada: Hitting Rock Bottom”, a short animated video on the decline of the EI program over the last 25 years.

After centuries of resistance we are moving toward justice for Aboriginal peoples in Canada. Racism, discrimination and other forms of oppression remain but Aboriginal Day is not a time to dwell on all that is wrong – it’s a day to celebrate victories.
