Alberta Flood Relief

On June 19, 2013, Alberta experienced catastrophic flashflooding described by the provincial government as the worst in Alberta's history. A total of 27 local states of emergency were declared as water levels rose and numerous communities were placed under evacuation orders. Over 100,000 people were displaced throughout the region.

Following the disastrous flooding in Alberta last June, PSAC launched an appeal among Components, Regional Offices, Area Councils, Committees and Locals to support the PSAC Social Justice Fund’s Alberta Solidarity Fund.The support was instantaneous and exceptionally generous. In just a few short weeks, we raised $22,800, which was donated to support organizations working in areas where our members have been affected and may be utilizing support services.The organizations we were able to support included:

On July 12, 2013, PSAC sponsored a meal at the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre, where members volunteered to prepare and serve meals to those in need.

Following the disastrous flooding in Alberta last week, there is now a massive, ongoing cleanup effort requiring thousands of volunteers to rebuild communities and repair damages to houses and personal property.In an effort to coordinate PSAC members who have asked how they can help, we are organizing volunteer days to get out into the communities and provide support to the families and small businesses affected.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada extends its solidarity to Albertans, including PSAC members who have suffered losses during the flooding in Southern Alberta.

The nation is watching closely while Banff, Canmore, Calgary and much of Southern Alberta faces devastating flooding and evacuations.PSAC has more than 4,300 members living in Southern Alberta. More than half work right in the downtown core, which has been completely shut down, including the Harry Hayes Federal Building.Our thoughts are with all of our members affected by this terrible disaster, and all Albertans who have had to evacuate their homes.We encourage everyone to stay safe and abide by the safety and evacuation notices.
