The Canadian government is divesting from 2.3 million acres of native grasslands in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba. These community pastures were created in 1935 under the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Act to restore the land following the Dust Bowl of the Great Depression.

Generosity seems widespread among PSAC Prairies members in the more than 210 Locals across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Agriculture Local 30048 in Lethbridge, Alberta is a shining example of this, with several inventive and effective initiatives in their workplace at the Lethbridge Research Centre to raise money and awareness.

Rob Clarke, the Conservative MP for Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River, has been silent on Parks Canada's decision to stop grooming ski trails in Prince Albert National Park, and we've taken notice. Marianne Hladun, Regional Executive Vice-President for the PSAC Prairie Region, wrote him a letter to voice her concerns.

Bill C-377, a private member's bill that directly attacks unions by driving up operating costs unnecessarily, is moving ahead with full force and will go to a final vote next week on Wednesday, December 12. If passed, this senseless legislation would be detrimental to all working families and crush many smaller unions and labour organizations in the process, who will be unable to keep up with the expensive and onerous requirements.

Stephen Harper's Conservatives are determined to ram through Bill C-377, a private members' bill that will force every union to file intrusive financial reports that will be posted on a public website for every employer to see. We need your help now to stop this bill in its tracks!

On October 25, 2012, members of the NDP caucus will be wearing a purple ribbon in solidarity with public sector workers affected by the recent cuts to jobs and public services. This initiative originated with a PSAC member, and we encourage Prairies members to join in and wear a purple ribbon to demonstrate that we are all affected by the cuts, and we oppose them.
