Marianne Hladun has served as Prairies Regional Executive Vice-President for the past five years. For over 20 years, Hladun’s comprehensive union experience has spanned various positions including President of Agriculture Union Local 40022.

She was elected North Saskatchewan Geographical Rep on the Prairie Region Council in 1999 and Alternate REVP in 2008 and 2011. She was National Human Rights Director for Agriculture Union for nine years, and Regional Vice-President, North Saskatchewan for one.

Previously elected three times to the CFIA bargaining team, Hladun is now responsible for 32 regional bargaining units, as well as being assigned to the PA bargaining team. She also leads Political Action and Campaigns and shares the Education AEC portfolios.

Hladun is an Alliance Facilitator, a graduate of PSAC’s Union Development Program and CLC’s Labour College of Canada, and holds a Labour Studies diploma from the University of Saskatchewan. She was Vice-President to the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour for 10 years and sat on committees including Education and Collective Bargaining/Labour Legislation. She also chaired Political Strategy for four years.

With a strong committment to community and social justice, Hladun has volunteered with the United Way of Saskatoon as Labour Representative on the Board of Directors for two terms, as well as the Saskatchewan Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization. She is also involved with NASHI, a charity to divert youth from human trafficking and has participated in five humanitarian missions to Ukraine with the charity.

Since 1986, Hladun has worked for Correctional Services of Canada, Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration and Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Each year in February, we honour Black History Month, a time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of black citizens in Canada and around the world.This month allows us the opportunity to reflect on the social forces that have shaped and influenced our communities. We revisit the struggles and challenges inherent in black history in order to continue our work towards harassment free workplaces and a racism free Canada.

As MPs return to Parliament Hill today, we will stand together to peacefully protest attacks on democracy, Indigenous freedoms, human rights and environment protections.

Rob Clarke, the Conservative MP for Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River, has been silent on Parks Canada's decision to stop grooming ski trails in Prince Albert National Park, and we've taken notice. Marianne Hladun, Regional Executive Vice-President for the PSAC Prairie Region, wrote him a letter to voice her concerns.

It's been a busy year, but even tireless activists need a break. I encourage you to make the most of what's left of 2012 by spending time with loved ones and making time for rest and relaxation. On behalf of the Prairie Region Council, I wish you and your family all the best this holiday season. Bill C-377, a private member's bill that directly attacks unions by driving up operating costs unnecessarily, is moving ahead with full force and will go to a final vote next week on Wednesday, December 12. If passed, this senseless legislation would be detrimental to all working families and crush many smaller unions and labour organizations in the process, who will be unable to keep up with the expensive and onerous requirements.

Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10 to acknowledge the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. This is an exciting opportunity for us to recognize the work of human rights advocates around the world, and right here within our union.
