As you may know, May 7-13 is recognized as North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. During this week, events are planned, and workplace activities are encouraged, where Safety and Health is brought back to the forefront. Too often, Health and Safety is an afterthought in our workplaces. All health and safety activists are encouraged to attend an event in your region, and plan workplace activities that remind workers of the importance of health and safety in their daily routines.

The National Day of Mourning, held on April 28, was established to remember those who have lost their lives, or suffered injury or illness on the job. It also recognizes those who have worked tirelessly to prevent exposures, injuries and fatalities on the job and to celebrate their victories.

From November 15, 2016 to February 15, 2017, the Workers Compensation Act Legislative Review Committee 2016 asked for input from workers, employers, labour unions, industry and safety associations, key stakeholders and interested Manitobans to get a thorough understanding of the issues in order to prepare a final report for the government's consideration. The Public Service Alliance of Canada, Prairie Region submitted an analysis of the issues for consideration on behalf of the more than 8,000 PSAC members living and working in Manitoba.

The federal government has announced its commitment to banning asbestos and asbestos-containing products by 2018. This is a long-awaited decision; PSAC has been calling on the federal government to ban the import, export and manufacturing of asbestos for years.

PSAC is taking the ongoing campaign to ban asbestos directly to the Prime Minister.

NDP MP Sheri Benson has introduced a private member’s bill, C-321, to ban the import, export and manufacturing of asbestos and use the Canadian Environmental Protection Act to protect workers’ health.
