About 50 PSAC members from across the Prairie Region will be gathering in Edmonton this weekend for the Prairies Health & Safety Conference.In response to the growing number of concerns brought forward by members and in response to member supported resolutions from the Prairie Region Convention, the overall theme will deal with Mental Health in the Workplace, with particular attention to the impact and prevention of bullying.

SADAO recently launched “Public Enemy!” a postcard campaign calling on the government to create a publicly accessible registry of all schools, and public and commercial buildings that contain asbestos, and the condition of asbestos within those buildings.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada stands behind Saskatchewan’s Official Opposition as they prepare to introduce a private member’s bill to create an asbestos registry of all public buildings under the Public Health Act.

The 2012 Prairie Regional Health and Safety Conference is coming up quickly on November 17-18 in Edmonton, Alberta.  Plans are well under way and we are looking forward to a meaningful, productive and very successful conference. Please note that the application deadline is September 20, 2012.

Dear Sisters and BrothersYour Prairie Region Council Health and Safety Committee (Brothers Clint Wirth, Manitoba and Alec Goertzen, Alberta along with Sister Nancy Johnson, Saskatchewan) have been working hard on plans for your upcoming Regional Health and Safety Conference.  Along with your Regional Executive Vice-President (Sister Marianne Hladun) and your Regional Representative Health and Safety (Brother Bruce Campbell), we are happy to report on progress in this endeavour.

Howard Willem, long-time PSAC member and activistm, was diagnosed with with mesothelioma (an asbestos related cancer of the lungs) and is leading the fight for safe workplaces and the banning of asbestos exportation in Canada.

Fatal Deception, a recently aired CBC documentary, looks into the asbestos industry and the harmful health effects of the mineral. It highlights how the industry and government have been lying to Canadians. The documentary asks, "Is the federal government relying on junk science to justify its support for re-opening asbestos mines in Quebec?"

Dear Brothers & Sisters,Together, we accomplished much to improve food safety in 2011. Thanks to you and thousands of others who have intervened, Ottawa made improvements to food safety and continued to address the chronic shortage of inspectors last year.But much of this progress is now threatened.
