Did you receive an email notice recently promoting the Workplace Wellness and Productivity Strategy for federal government employees? This notice promoted a new employer strategy for managing sick leave and long-term disability across the federal public service, but it failed to mention one very important fact: this new strategy has not been negotiated with your union.

The federal government wants to introduce a short-term disability plan, to replace the current sick leave system, with the new system to be in place by July 2016.

Any concession is a threat to our hard-earned rights and benefits and will undoubtedly set the tone for future bargaining with separate employers and those that are provincially and municipally legislated. In other words, we are all affected by concession bargaining.

Please find enclosed the guidelines and nomination form for the Prairie Voice Award. This award is presented to members who have provided exemplary service or have been role models and mentors for our members. The objective is to recognize PSAC members for their commitment to the labour movement and work that benefits PSAC members in the Prairie Region.

The CD Howe Institute releases a virtually identical study every year, peddling the same misconceptions about federal pensions and public sector compensation. Federal public sector employees work hard for and make significant contributions to their pension plan – more than 10 cents on each dollar earned.

April 28 is recognized as the National Day of Mourning. On this day, we are reminded of the grim statistics of workers who have died or been injured in Canadian workplaces. Still many more have been discouraged or prevented from claiming compensation they were entitled to.  We also remember the fact that these numbers are real people with real families.

PSAC is now accepting applications for the 17 scholarships it offers to PSAC members and their children. Applicants must submit either an 800 word essay, a video, infographic or audio recording to answer a question about issues related to PSAC's soon-to-begin round of bargaining. Deadline for all applications is June 27, 2014.
