 CUPE Manitoba is hosting two Town Hall meetings on Employment Insurance, one in Winnipeg and one in Brandon.  Guest Speaker Neil Cohen, Director of the Community Unemployed Help Centre will walk us through the Employment Insurance system and outline resources available to unemployed Manitobans. The Town hall will also deal with recent federal cuts to Employment Insurance.Susan Norman, NVP for CEIU Manitoba, will also be speaking at the event.For more information, see attached or visit the MFL events page

 In July, Treasury Board President Tony Clement made an appearance in Brandon, Manitoba where PSAC members handed him and Merv Tweed, Conservative MP for Brandon-Souris, their affected letters. Members also discussed their concerns regarding EI services leaving Manitoba and the issue of closing the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) in Saskatchewan.

The two largest federal public service unions are charging Treasury Board and a number of departments with failing to set up the system that will assist employees whose jobs are disappearing to stay in the public service.

In an effort to boycott employer activities for public service week the Edmonton Area Council ordered cupcakes for PSAC members during public service week. Locals located in Canada Place picked up cupcakes throughout the day. Other Locals ordered theirs to be delivered were encouraged to coordinate their cupcake affair on or around the same time as the employer-planned celebrations. Click any photo to view the entire Edmonton National Public Service Week photo album.

The member appreciation BBQ in Regina was a huge succes. The BBQ was organized to honour public service workers and speak out against the employer's hypocritical position on National Public Service Week.Members turned out in large numbers over 400 for a hamburger or hotdog and drink, courtesy of M&M Burgers. PSAC members volunteered to help serve and talk with the members, and many attendees stayed to network with other PSAC members.

WFA ProcessIs is beneficial for us to make the SERLO process take as long as possible? What tools do we have at our disposal to ensure the SERLO process takes as long as possible?The selection process is a process that will be determined by the employer. The timelines are at the employer’s discretion, as long as they fulfill the requirements set out in the Public Service Employment Act and the Public Service Commission’s Guide on the Selection of Employees for Retention or Layoff.

LeaveHow does the duration of an employee’s leave of absence impact alternation where the position has not been filled permanently?The priority types are governed by legislation.If a person is on leave of absence, and their position has been filled indeterminately, they have a “leave of absence priority”, pursuant to the Public Service Employment Act.
